Disney’s TV Overhaul Shows Where Media Jobs Are Being Cut

Disney is planning to restructure its television business, a move that could result in hundreds of layoffs, according to The Wall Street Journal. The plan could consolidate teams across ABC Entertainment, 20th Television, Hulu Originals and Freeform. The restructuring is designed to organize the business around streaming rather than traditional television. Disney has already cut jobs this year across marketing, Pixar, ABC News and ESPN. In September, the company laid off a few hundred employees, mainly in human resources and technology. Disney employed about 231,000 people at the end of fiscal 2025, including roughly 172,000 in the U.S.

Disney is not simply cutting jobs. It is changing which types of jobs it needs.

That matters to anyone working in media, marketing, technology, HR or other corporate functions. When companies restructure, entire teams can be combined or eliminated even when the business itself continues to grow.

Job seekers should pay attention to where a company is investing, not just whether it has open positions. A company can be hiring in streaming while cutting jobs in traditional television.

Your resume should also make your transferable skills clear. If your industry is being reshaped, relying on one job title or narrow specialty can make it harder to move into the areas where employers are still hiring.
